New Fortress

Dominating the hill of San Marco, the New Fortress was built by the Venetians (16th century), after it had been decided that the Old Fortress was not enough for the defense and protection of the town.

The Old and the New Fortresses are still connected through an underground channel, now closed for the public. On its massive gate, visitors can see the amazing sculpture of a Lion, an emblem that always shows the relation between this Fortress and Venice.
Today, the New Fortress hosts many cultural events, art exhibitions and concerts.
